University of South Florida Interdisciplinary Sciences Building by HOK

University of South Florida Interdisciplinary Sciences Building designed by global design, architecture, engineering and planning firm HOK. HOK has 24 offices worldwide. Since their founding in 1955, they have used design to enrich people’s lives and help organizations succeed. Their 1,600 people collaborate across a network of 24 offices on three continents. The University of South Florida wanted its new Interdisciplinary Sciences Building to provide modern teaching labs and help it attract and keep faculty and researchers.

I was on the search committee that chose HOK for this project and I can definitely say that they have met our high expectations.” said Pritish Mukherjee, Professor of Physics, University of South Florida. HOK helped USF adjust its master plan to accommodate a large, interdisciplinary facility. HOK’s science and technology architects designed the building to promote interdisciplinary research and teaching with labs that support the university’s physics, chemistry and biology programs while creating shared core facilities.

In addition to labs, classrooms, office space, study areas and shell space, the facility includes two 300-seat lecture halls, a bio-nano research lab, an imaging center and a nuclear magnetic resonance facility. The building supports multidisciplinary research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and includes the BITT Center of Excellence, life science thrust initiative and functional multi-scale materials by design thrust initiative. It also accommodates the recently federally funded Center for Integrated Functional Materials in the physics department. The team was able to include an atrium space in the design without losing any program space or adding to the project cost.
