Facebook says spam isn’t good for its users, and it will readily go to court if technical measures to weed out fake “likes” don’t succeed. In a blog post Friday discussing the company’s ongoing efforts to keep activity on the world’s largest social network “authentic,” Matt Jones, site integrity engineer, revealed that Facebook has had previous legal success against spammers. “We have obtained nearly $2 billion in legal judgments against spammers, and we utilize these channels when possible to remind would-be offenders that we will fight back to prevent abuse on our platform,” he wrote. Jones didn’t provide details of which parties Facebook went after in court, or when the judgments were rendered. Jones also urged businesses not to buy fake “likes” for their Facebook pages. “The spammers behind fake likes have one goal — to make money off of Page owners without delivering any value in return,” he wrote. The blog post coincides with National Cyber Security Awareness Month, which kicked off on Wednesday.
